La Gavilana
Size: 100 Acre (40 Hectare) Year Planted: 2006-2009 Price: US $275,000
La Gavilana is located about 4 miles from the Costa Rican border in an area with ample rainfall due to its position in-between Lake Nicaragua and the Pacific Ocean. The hilly terrain provides well-drained soils ideal for teak, mahogany and tropical oak plantations. It is in close proximity to San Juan Del Sur, a popular tourist destination. The farm is adjoined to other Maderas Sostenibles farms.
The trees were planted starting in 2006 with the largest planting occurring in 2008. Some of the teak trees are already 20 feet tall and the mahogany has also taken very well. The farm also has some volunteer trees of valuable hardwood species such as Laurel.
The farm has approximately 25 acres of naturally forested area which is home to many wildlife species including spider monkeys, howler monkeys, deer, and hawks which is where the farm gets it’s name (gavilana means hawk in Spanish). There is a stream that passes through the middle and a small orchard with mature mango and orange trees.
